Located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida:

Chicago-born artist Frederic Clay Bartlett created Bonnet House in 1920 on South Florida oceanfront land given to him and his second wife, Helen Louise Birch, by her father, Hugh Taylor Birch, a prominent Chicago attorney. 

Today the estate is a preeminent house museum dedicated not only to historic environmental preservation but also to learning and creative expression.

Features & Specialties

  • Historic Home & Studio: Built in 1920 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Bonnet House is one of the few complete homes and studios of two American artists with original furnishings open to the public. 

  • Artistic Legacy: The estate showcases the works of artists Frederic and Evelyn Bartlett, including Evelyn's paintings and her collection of animal sculptures from Southeast Asia and Africa. 

  • Natural Beauty: Spanning 35 acres, the property features nature trails, a freshwater lagoon, mangrove swamps, and diverse wildlife, including frogs, turtles, fish, butterflies, manatees, cranes, foxes, swans, and over a dozen Brazilian squirrel monkeys. 

  • Additional Attractions: Visitors can explore the Shell Museum Complex, which houses a vast collection of shells from around the world, and one of the largest orchid collections in the U.S.



Pricing 

Self-Guided Tour (House & Gardens)

  • Adults: $25

  • Ages 6–17: $8

  • Children 5 and under: Free

  • Broward County Residents (with ID): $22

  • Gardens Only: $15

  • Museums for All: $3 per person for up to four (with EBT card and valid photo ID)

Guided Tours

  • Downstairs Tour: $30 for adults, $10 for ages 8–16

  • Upstairs/Downstairs VIP Tour: $40 per person (includes access to private living quarters; must be able to climb 20 stairs)

All ticket sales are final and non-refundable. 

Parking

Bonnet House offers free parking in a shaded lot located at 900 North Birch Road, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304. This lot is just south of Sunrise Boulevard and provides convenient access to the museum. 

Hours of Operation

  • Self-Guided Tours: Tuesday–Friday: 11:00 am – 3:00 pm; Saturday & Sunday: 11:00 am – 4:00 pm

  • Guided Tours:

    • Downstairs: Tuesday, Thursday & Friday: 10:00 am & 1:00 pm; Saturday: 10:00 am

    • Upstairs/Downstairs VIP: Wednesdays: 10:00 am and 1:00 pm

  • Closed on Mondays, as well as on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, and May 3 & 4, 2025, for the Fort Lauderdale Air Show.
